The project focused on the redevelopment of the former Burger Hospital dating from 1890 on the Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam. Part of the old Burgerziekenhuis on Domselaerstraat was converted into residential and working buildings exclusively for women. The plans included that 20 percent was reserved for women of non-Western descent, in accordance with the population composition of Amsterdam East. The initiative for this project came from the coordination group Burgerziekenhuis voor Vrouwen (BVV). The objective of the project was to more integrate living and working for women and thus to solve some of the problems of working and caring for the family outdoors.

After lengthy negotiations, the BVV project was realized with a living area and a work area: 16 individual homes in the old building, 8 individual homes in the new building, 35 business spaces. A nursery in the original hospital building also initially came under the organization of BVV. In the business area, the blue doors give access to the businesses, the yellow to the homes.

The companies are mainly located in front of the wing, on the Domselaerstraat; the houses are mainly on the garden side; the spaces for the residential groups are located on the first and second floors on the street side. Due to a wavy wall, the homes and businesses are separated from each other. There are three types of homes, varying in size and layout. Among the homes designed by Hartsuyker-Curjel are the 'living homes', intended for women who wanted to start working at home.
